This trio of short stories delves into the mindsets and dilemmas of three very different Americans, each at a crossroads or private crisis. They remind readers that people have opportunity every day to either isolate or engage someone, and that people of every age and background have hidden struggles and confusions, hopes and dreams that matter, and a history and culture that follows them.
In "Cuckoo Funeral", a Korean-American teen knows her mother is the keeper of a secret, but she cannot pry it from her. In "Magique", a man wants his wife to partner with him in his greatest dream - to be a full-time magician - but she thinks magic is a stupid hobby. He gives her one last chance to support him. In "The Odd Job", an old man offers a vagrant woman a job scraping paint off his rundown house, but her own self-protective layers peel off as the man serves her in simple ways.
Christina Hyun first published "The Odd Job" in "Bellowing Ark", and it also took second place in "Mom Writer's Literary Magazine's" short fiction contest. She workshopped both "The Odd Job" and "Magique" at Zoetrope's online writing community to which she is grateful for critique and support.

This group of short stories reveals a newly discovered talent who can't be placed firmly inside any genre. The author's voice easily adapts to different characters of a wide spectrum of ages and backgrounds. My favorite of these three stories was "Cuckoo Funeral" an account of family history and of a mother's friendship that is foreign and sometimes hurtful to the teenaged narrator. The line that I can't stop thinking about is when the narrator's mother, trying to explain what seems like a horrific betrayal committed a generation ago, says, "All kind of thing happen when people have no money." This line, and the story, are stuck in my head, and I think that is one of the absolute best things a short story can achieve.I look forward to reading The Stool Pigeon and anything else Christina Hyun writes.

Cuckoo Funeral Magique The Odd Job Three Short Stories edition by Christina Hyun Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Three different short stories with a common theme of the human condition. Thoughtful writing that tweaks at your own emotional response in relating to the characters.
To anybody who has had an "emotional aha" moment, these stories ring true. That's pretty much everybody, isn't it? Being from Arizona, and having known a few loners and drifters, "The Odd Job" was my favorite of the three stories. It paints a beautiful picture of the healing power of human compassion. I loved this book.
In a minimum of words, these three short stories conjure strong characters who struggle to deal with differing pasts, conflicting dreams, and submerged emotions. Repeated imagery viewed through different filters moves each story forward, often toward a poetically ambiguous ending. Intriguing. I look forward to more from Ms. Hyun.
My favorite of the trio of stories was Magique, about an aspiring magician and his assistant wife. It describes the disintegration of a marriage and leaves you intrigued about the possible "solution".
The first story, Cuckoo Funeral, is a thought provoking story addressing issues of family, poverty, and also issues of bi-cultural identity.
The third story, The Odd Job, beautifully describes a young woman finally getting acceptance from a much older man who hires her to scrape paint from his home.
Ms. Hyun writes with a beautifully lyrical style. She draws you in with few words, and brings clear images of her characters and scenes leaving you wanting for more.
These are great if you're looking for a quick hit of good writing. CUCKOO FUNERAL is thoughtful, with a dreamlike quality. MAGIQUE is the most muscular story, you can feel the main character's wicked glee at the very end. THE ODD JOB has a sweet pathos to it, I would love to see those characters pop up in a longer story sometime, fingers crossed!
The ways her stories twist and turn is so creative and touching. After I finished reading the last sentence in all three stories, all I could say was, "Wow, Wow, how beautiful!!!" I read them all 3 times and had the same response every time. There are too many sad, bad, the ugly stories and news these days. But in Christina's stories the beautiful side of humanity is expressed so subtly but clearly. They lifted my spirit. Soonhee
